Aug 18, 2026 - Form 1042-S for 2026: What's New

The 2026 Form 1042-S is now available for generation in Sprintax Calculus.

  1. Form 1042-S for 2026

Form 1042-S for the 2026 filing season is now available for generation in Sprintax Calculus. A few notable changes appear on the 2026 form compared to last year's version.

A. Address fields redesigned

Recipient and withholding-agent address sections are now split into separate boxes instead of a single freeform field. This change is intended to standardize electronic reporting and reduce formatting errors.

B. Chapter 3 exemption codes

A Chapter 3 exemption code is now required in all cases where the tax withheld is less than 30%. For example, if you're reporting payments of scholarship or fellowship grants subject to a 14% withholding tax under section 1441(a), you must report Chapter 3 exemption code 02 (exempt or reduced withholding under IRC) in box 3a.

Important notes

There are no changes to the 1042-S process in Calculus for tax year 2026. However, the current FIRE system for submitting forms to the IRS is being retired — IRIS (Information Returns Intake System) will be the only intake system for 2026 Forms 1042-S. Keep the following requirements in mind when processing Forms 1042-S through IRIS:

  1. Renaming administrator's permission

In Account → Administrators, the permission “Export 1042-S TXT” has been renamed to “E-File Form 1042-S” to align with the new IRIS e-filing terminology.

There's no change in system behavior. The permission continues to grant administrators access to TXT export for the FIRE system, as well as to IRIS e-file functionality.
