The Tax Treaties section in Calculus questionnaire provides foreign nationals an overview of whether they are eligible for tax treaty benefits or no treaty is available.
This section will assess the eligibility based on the information provided in the earlier steps of questionnaire, specifically the requirement of a US Identification Number (TIN), which includes either a Social Security Number or an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number.
Access Tax Treaties Section
1. Log into your Calculus account.
2. Head to the users tab > All Accounts and click anywhere on a user’s record.
3. A side panel will appear on the right side of the screen.
4. Under Account Details, click on the Edit button.
This will bring you to the Foreign National Questionnaire
5. On the left side Progress Bar, select Tax Treaties.
6. This is where foreign nationals will see any tax treaties available for them
7. Individuals can accept the claim or choose not to benefit from the treaty
Note: Foreign Nationals should ensure their US TIN is entered correctly on Foreign Personal Data section.
8. Foreign Nationals will need to provide the applicable tax forms to your Institutions to claim these benefits.
Warning: Institutions are unable to grant treaty benefits unless the required forms are completed and signed, listing a valid US TIN.
9. If no tax treaty is available, a message will display: "Your country does not have a tax treaty agreement with the USA covering any of your income."
10. If the Individual is not eligible to claim the tax treaty, a message will display "The specific type of income you receive is not covered under the treaty"
